Galileo's championing of heliocentrism and Copernicanism was controversial during his lifetime, when most subscribed to either geocentrism or the Tychonic system. He spent the rest of his life under house arrest. Galileo became an accomplished lutenist himself and would have learned early from his father a scepticism for established authority. The youngest, Michelangelo (or Michelagnolo), also became a noted lutenist and composer although he contributed to financial burdens during Galileo's young adulthood. Michelangelo was unable to contribute his fair share of their father's promised dowries to their brothers- in- law, who would later attempt to seek legal remedies for payments due. Michelangelo would also occasionally have to borrow funds from Galileo to support his musical endeavours and excursions. These financial burdens may have contributed to Galileo's early fire to develop inventions that would bring him additional income. When Galileo Galilei was eight, his family moved to Florence, but he was left with Jacopo Borghini for two years. The Italian male given name . In it he made a point of quoting Acts 1: 1. They had two daughters, Virginia (born in 1. Il sito dell'aeroporto di Pisa. Residencia de estudiantes y Colegio Mayor en Valencia GALILEO GALILEI. Both girls were accepted by the convent of San Matteo in Arcetri and remained there for the rest of their lives. She died on 2 April 1. Galileo at the Basilica of Santa Croce, Florence. Livia took the name Sister Arcangela and was ill for most of her life. Vincenzo was later legitimised as the legal heir of Galileo and married Sestilia Bocchineri. To him it seemed, by comparison with his heartbeat, that the chandelier took the same amount of time to swing back and forth, no matter how far it was swinging. When he returned home, he set up two pendulums of equal length and swung one with a large sweep and the other with a small sweep and found that they kept time together. It was not until the work of Christiaan Huygens, almost one hundred years later, that the tautochrone nature of a swinging pendulum was used to create an accurate timepiece. However, after accidentally attending a lecture on geometry, he talked his reluctant father into letting him study mathematics and natural philosophy instead of medicine. Galileo also studied disegno, a term encompassing fine art, and in 1. Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence, teaching perspective and chiaroscuro. Being inspired by the artistic tradition of the city and the works of the Renaissance artists, Galileo acquired an aesthetic mentality. While a young teacher at the Accademia, he began a lifelong friendship with the Florentine painter Cigoli, who included Galileo's lunar observations in one of his paintings. In 1. 59. 1, his father died, and he was entrusted with the care of his younger brother Michelagnolo. In 1. 59. 2, he moved to the University of Padua where he taught geometry, mechanics, and astronomy until 1. His multiple interests included the study of astrology, which at the time was a discipline tied to the studies of mathematics and astronomy. Portrait by Leoni. Cardinal Bellarmine had written in 1. Copernican system could not be defended without . This theory was so important to him that he originally intended to entitle his Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems the Dialogue on the Ebb and Flow of the Sea. He circulated his first account of the tides in 1. Cardinal Orsini. As a general account of the cause of tides, however, his theory was a failure. If this theory were correct, there would be only one high tide per day. Galileo and his contemporaries were aware of this inadequacy because there are two daily high tides at Venice instead of one, about twelve hours apart. Galileo dismissed this anomaly as the result of several secondary causes including the shape of the sea, its depth, and other factors. It began as a dispute over the nature of comets, but by the time Galileo had published The Assayer (Il Saggiatore) in 1. The title page of the book describes Galileo as philosopher and . Grassi concluded that the comet was a fiery body which had moved along a segment of a great circle at a constant distance from the earth. In its opening passage, Galileo and Guiducci's Discourse gratuitously insulted the Jesuit Christopher Scheiner. The Jesuits were offended. Scientific opposition came from Tycho Brahe and others, and arose from the fact that, if heliocentrism were true, an annual stellar parallax should be observed, though none was. Copernicus had correctly postulated that parallax was negligible because the stars were so distant. However, Brahe had countered that, since stars appeared to have measurable size, if the stars were that distant, they would be gigantic, and in fact far larger than the Sun or any other celestial body. In Brahe's system, by contrast, the stars were a little more distant than Saturn, and the Sun and stars were comparable in size. In December 1. 61. Grand Duchess Christina of Florence confronted one of Galileo's friends and followers, Benedetto Castelli, with biblical objections to the motion of the earth. According to Maurice Finocchiaro this was done in a friendly and gracious manner, out of curiosity. Prompted by this incident, Galileo wrote a letter to Castelli in which he argued that heliocentrism was actually not contrary to biblical texts, and that the bible was an authority on faith and morals, not on science. This letter was not published, but circulated widely. At the start of 1. Monsignor Francesco Ingoli initiated a debate with Galileo, sending him an essay disputing the Copernican system. Galileo later stated that he believed this essay to have been instrumental in the action against Copernicanism that followed. It borrowed primarily from the arguments of Tycho Brahe, and it notedly mentioned Brahe's argument that heliocentrism required the stars to be much larger than the Sun. Ingoli wrote that the great distance to the stars in the heliocentric theory . On 2. 6 February, Galileo was called to Bellarmine's residence and ordered.. He revived his project of writing a book on the subject, encouraged by the election of Cardinal Maffeo Barberini as Pope Urban VIII in 1. Barberini was a friend and admirer of Galileo, and had opposed the condemnation of Galileo in 1. Galileo's resulting book, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, was published in 1. Inquisition and papal permission. He made another request, that his own views on the matter be included in Galileo's book. Only the latter of those requests was fulfilled by Galileo. Whether unknowingly or deliberately, Simplicio, the defender of the Aristotelian geocentric view in Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, was often caught in his own errors and sometimes came across as a fool. Indeed, although Galileo states in the preface of his book that the character is named after a famous Aristotelian philosopher (Simplicius in Latin, . Unfortunately for his relationship with the Pope, Galileo put the words of Urban VIII into the mouth of Simplicio. Most historians agree Galileo did not act out of malice and felt blindsided by the reaction to his book. He finally arrived in February 1. Vincenzo Maculani to be charged. Throughout his trial Galileo steadfastly maintained that since 1. However, he was eventually persuaded to admit that, contrary to his true intention, a reader of his Dialogue could well have obtained the impression that it was intended to be a defence of Copernicanism. In view of Galileo's rather implausible denial that he had ever held Copernican ideas after 1. Dialogue, his final interrogation, in July 1. It was in three essential parts: Galileo was found . A 1. 64. 0s painting by the Spanish painter Bartolom. The earliest known written account of the legend dates to a century after his death, but Stillman Drake writes . Galileo was ordered to read the seven penitential psalms once a week for the next three years. However, his daughter Maria Celeste relieved him of the burden after securing ecclesiastical permission to take it upon herself. Here he summarised work he had done some forty years earlier, on the two sciences now called kinematics and strength of materials, published in Holland to avoid the censor. This book has received high praise from Albert Einstein. He went completely blind in 1. Florence for medical advice. In this context, Sobel argues that the problem of Galileo was presented to the pope by court insiders and enemies of Galileo. Having been accused of weakness in defending the church, Urban reacted against Galileo out of anger and fear. Galileo's father, Vincenzo Galilei, a lutenist and music theorist, had performed experiments establishing perhaps the oldest known non- linear relation in physics: for a stretched string, the pitch varies as the square root of the tension. Thus, a limited amount of mathematics had long related music and physical science, and young Galileo could see his own father's observations expand on that tradition. In The Assayer he wrote . It is written in the language of mathematics, and its characters are triangles, circles, and other geometric figures... He was often willing to change his views in accordance with observation. After the success of several of his Polish films at Cannes (Blind Chance, A Short Film About Killing), Krzysztof Kieslowski was wooed by a number of French producers. By the time Marin Karmitz signed Kieslowski up to make the Three Colours Trilogy, he had already established a team and a method in the French/Polish co- production, the haunting and lyrical La Double Vie de V. The director took the French revolutionary ideals of libert. While the concept may sound intimidating, Kieslowski chose to examine these ideals through small- scale individual situations, thereby illuminating and commenting on universal themes in a fashion typical of the director of the Dekalog series. Faced with the loss of her husband, a famous composer, and her daughter in a car crash, Julie (Juliette Binoche) tries to deal with her loss by leaving everything and everyone in her life behind her and disappears. Seeking absolute libert. The character played by Binoche is a complex one, trying to contain any demonstration of emotion or feeling and avoiding emotional involvement with people she meets, but she is unable to escape herself or her creativity, which breaks through her froideur in bursts of sorrowful music. She only achieves her personal freedom when she stops resisting who she is and lets her life begin again. Also working on that film were editor Jacques Witta and director of photography Slawomir Idziak (who also photographed A Short Film About Killing) and the use of filters and beautiful composition give this film a visual presence and character that is appropriate for this film and sets it apart from the others in the trilogy. The film is however more closely related to Kieslowski's 1. No End, where Ulla (Grazyna Szapolowski), also tries to come to terms with her sexuality and expression of her own freedom after the death of her lawyer husband in Poland under Martial Law. That film also carries much of the mood and darkness re- created in Blue, although tellingly, the director's outlook is more optimistic here than in his Polish film. Watching it again after a number of years, I was surprised that it was a much better film than I remembered. The overall impression that remained with me was that it was a cold, bleak and rather downbeat film – an impression enforced by the lugubrious soundtrack that lingers in the mind, but Blue actually ends on a very optimistic and hopeful, if rather reflective note. There is a lot to absorb in Blue and its style by necessity alienates the viewer in many ways, but it’s a film of great depth and meaning that stands as one of the most accomplished films made by Kieslowski. Blue is presented in 1. There are practically no marks on the print whatsoever, colours are faithfully represented and there is only a little grain visible at times. The menus are the standard MK2 menus rather than standard Artificial Eye menus, and are clear and functional and accompanied by the beautiful music from the film. The remastered soundtrack remains faithful to the original stereo soundtrack, using the surrounds mainly for the musical score which punctuates scenes at intervals throughout the film to great effect. These are presented non- anamorphically at 1. This is a particularly welcome extra as we tend only to hear snatches of the soundtrack throughout the film. The interviews are divided into chapters, which I found useful, although a continuous play option would have been nice. The Binoche and Witta interviews also double as a mini commentary on key scenes from the film. Curiously, I noticed a better picture quality on the Binoche commentary, clearly showing less grain than the main feature. Three Colours: Blue (French: Trois couleurs : Bleu) is a 1993 French drama film written, produced, and directed by the acclaimed Polish director Krzysztof Kie. Blue is the first of three films that comprise The Three. With an in- depth analysis of one simple scene of a sugar cube soaking up coffee, Kieslowski brilliantly manages to illuminate the whole film. This is absolutely superb. The knowledge of his craft and the ability to convey his ideas as a director are clearly evident in this feature. It is the work of a true and undisputed master of the cinema.

He and Danzig remained the only consistent members of the Misfits until the group disbanded in 1. The trio of Danzig, Mart. They recorded the band's first single, . Caiafa's surname was misspelled on the record's sleeve, prompting him to insist that in the future he be credited as . The band played their first two performances at CBGB in New York City, followed by other local performances over the following two months. The addition of a permanent guitar player allowed Danzig to phase out the electric piano and focus on singing, and pushed the band's sound in a punk rock direction. Danzig and Only judged Mart. The band found a recording opportunity when Mercury Records wished to use the name Blank Records for one of its subdivisions and offered Danzig thirty hours of free studio time in exchange for the trademark to the name. Danzig accepted, and in January 1. Misfits entered a New York recording studio to record their first album. The band recorded seventeen songs, fourteen of which were mixed for the proposed Static Age album. The band were unable to find a record label interested in releasing it, so they released four of the songs in June 1. Static Age was not released in its entirety until 1. He painted skeletal patterns on his performance clothing, while Only began applying dark makeup around his eyes and styling his hair in a long point hanging from his forehead between his eyes and down to his chin, a style that became known as a . This new style and musical direction would later be described as the subgenre . While in Canada in October 1. Franch. Jim Catania also quit following the tour, citing a distaste for the horror direction in which the band was heading. Within two months the pair were replaced by drummer Joey Poole, under the pseudonym Joey Image, and guitarist Bobby Steele. The new lineup of Danzig, Only, Image, and Steele began performing in December 1. The band also launched a fan club named the . Only spoke with singer Dave Vanian about the possibility of the Misfits touring the United Kingdom with The Damned. That November the band released the . Upon arriving there, however, they learned that Vanian had not taken his conversation with Only seriously and had not planned on having the Misfits on the tour. Vanian attempted to arrange for the Misfits to take part in the tour, but the band members were unhappy with the situation and left the tour after only two shows. Image then quit the band and flew back to the United States. With their return flight not scheduled until late December, the remaining band members stayed in London. Only spent time with Sid Vicious' mother Anne Ritchie, whom he had befriended after Vicious' death in February 1. Danzig and Steele got into a fight with skinheads while waiting to see The Jam, were arrested, and spent two nights in jail in Brixton; this experience inspired the later song . Although in an interview on podcast San Clemente Punk, Bobby Steele tells a completely different version of the events. Upon their return to the United States the Misfits released the Beware. EP in January 1. 98. Joseph Mc. Guckin as their new drummer under the pseudonym Arthur Googy. During this time Only's younger brother Paul Caiafa, a longtime fan of the band who went by the nickname Doyle, began learning to play guitar with help from Danzig and Only. The Misfits began working on an album which they planned to release through their Plan 9 label, recording twelve songs in a studio in August 1. Doyle practiced with the band and recorded his own guitar tracks for the songs, and Only began persuading Danzig that Doyle would fit into the band better than Steele. That October Steele was ejected from the band in favor of the sixteen- year- old Doyle. Steele went on to form The Undead, while Doyle made his debut with the Misfits at their annual Halloween performance at Irving Plaza in New York City. After several more performances the band took another hiatus for six months. After reconvening, the band selected three of the twelve songs from their August 1. Hits from Hell in April 1. Throughout the rest of 1. Walk Among Us. They had planned to release it through Plan 9 but instead accepted an offer from Slash Records, deciding to rework the album before its release. In October 1. 98. August 1. 98. 0 sessions as the . On November 2. 0 they recorded a performance at On Broadway in San Francisco. Black Flag were also performing that night at the Mabuhay Gardens downstairs from On Broadway, and Black Flag singer Henry Rollins, a longtime fan of the band, came up to watch the Misfits' soundcheck. He stayed to watch the band's set and sang guest vocals on . The two bands crossed paths again on Christmas in Lodi, where Black Flag wound up playing as the opening band for the Necros and the Misfits. It was the first full- length Misfits album to be properly released, and the only album to be released while the early incarnation of the band was still active. A national tour in support of the album followed, and the band's performances began to grow more intense and violent. Danzig and Googy clashed frequently during the tour, and after a heated argument at a Mc. Donald's restaurant Danzig kicked Googy out of the band, delaying their plans to record their next EP. They offered the vacant drummer position to their friend Eerie Von, who had served as their occasional roadie and photographer, but he had already committed to drumming for Rosemary's Babies. Henry Rollins recommended former Black Flag drummer Robo, who flew to New Jersey to join the Misfits in July 1. Doyle graduated from high school and he and Only began working full- time at their father's machine shop, earning money to purchase new instruments, fund the band's tours, and press records, while Danzig ran the Fiend Club and continued writing new songs. In September 1. 98. Misfits embarked on a national tour, with the Necros as their opening act. During the tour they stopped at a studio to record the instrumental tracks for their next EP. They were arrested in New Orleans on charges of grave robbing while attempting to locate the grave of voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau, but bailed themselves out of jail and skipped their court date in order to drive to their next performance in Florida. Following the tour they released seven songs from the November 1. San Francisco in limited numbers only to members of the Fiend Club as the Evilive EP. By this time Danzig was growing increasingly dissatisfied with the Misfits and had begun writings songs for a new band project. In June 1. 98. 3 he confided to Henry Rollins that he planned to quit the group. Earth A. D./Wolfs Blood demonstrated the increased influence of hardcore punk and heavy metal on the band, though they would break up just two months before it was released. After a series of arguments with Danzig, Robo left the band in August and Danzig became further disenchanted, beginning to audition musicians for his next project. On October 2. 9, 1. Misfits played their annual Halloween performance at Greystone Hall in Detroit with the Necros. Danzig had selected Brian Damage, formerly of Genocide and Verbal Abuse, as the band's new drummer. |
